Chapter 15: The Grave
They came out of the pines without a sound, eight men in plain grey with the Vice-Leader's steel heels.
Four carried drawn swords, two carried crossbows, and the last two carried nothing, which Ji-han liked least.
The captain was a thick man with a flat voice and an old scar through one eyebrow.
"Gwon Tae-san," he said, trying the name out. "The sword-bearer. I'd wondered."
"You heard," Tae-san said.
"Every word. The Vice-Leader will be very pleased."
"And you came out to say so?"
"We came out to take you both back. The Vice-Leader would like you alive."
The captain's eyes slid to Ji-han.
"He said the cult dog might be harder."
"The cult dog," Ji-han said, "has a knife and a bad mood."
Tae-san walked to the taller cairn.
He pulled the sword out of the ground, and the point came up bright and clean out of the earth.
It was his master's sword.
He held it in his right hand.
"I'm sorry about this," he told the grave quietly, and turned around.
The fight lasted less than a minute, and Ji-han would remember it for the rest of his life.
The crossbow bolts came first.
Ji-han went left and Tae-san went right, and the bolts hit the cairn, and a stone cracked.
Tae-san was an enormous, slow-looking man, and he moved.
He took the first swordsman's blade on his guard and turned it.
Then he put his shoulder through the man's chest hard enough to lift him off his feet.
There was no flourish in it.
It was only a very strong man who had practiced for twenty-five years in someone else's shadow.
Ji-han took the two unarmed ones, because they were his.
They were palm fighters, good ones, and the first got a hand on Ji-han's sleeve before he could slide out of it.
