Chapter 24: Next April
"Yes," I said, before the box was even open.
Terrence took it out of the dog's mouth with great dignity and wiped it on his shirt.
"I haven't asked yet," he said.
"Then ask," I said, "and I'll say it again."
He asked on one knee on the deck boards, with my mother crying into her napkin and Joan holding the dog's collar.
I said yes the second time, too.
The wedding was held on the first of April, a year after the dinner, at the end of the dock at Cutter Point.
I chose the date on purpose.
The day had done enough to me, and I wanted it back.
Two hundred white folding chairs stood on the gravel lot facing the water.
Strings of lights hung from every mast in the marina.
At two o'clock the sun came out over the lake, and the whole place smelled of fresh paint and cut grass.
I stood at the top of the boathouse stairs in a plain ivory dress with a gap in my smile that nobody had asked me to fix.
My mother stood beside me in her good blue suit.
She had insisted on walking down the stairs on her own.
Joan fussed with the back of my dress, her pearls tapping the wall.
"Ernest sent a card," she said.
"I put it on the mantel."
"He has paid the tuition for forty children at the farm school in Ohio this month, and he wrote that he is sorry in the margin."
"That's something," I said.
"He's still paying," said Joan.
"He'll be paying for years."
She smoothed my veil.
