Chapter 12: The Side Letter
By seven o'clock the story was on four sports channels and a morning show.
Lena sat at Beck's kitchen table in his oversized sweatshirt, scrolling with her thumb.
Telford's Wife and Wolves Captain: A Locker Room Scandal.
Under it, a reporter had written, Sources say the Telfords' marriage was already over.
"They'll say I was the one who cheated," she said.
"Let them."
"Donald will say it in court."
"Donald will say anything." Beck set a mug of coffee in front of her. "I need to show you something. I should've shown you three days ago."
He put a leather folder on the table.
It was the same kind Amber carried, with the wolf's head stamped on the front.
"Donald gave me this yesterday," Beck said. "He wanted me to hold it over you. He wanted me to scare you out of the video."
"What is it?"
"Read the top page first."
It was a letter on Dunning Group paper, dated in August.
Lena read the first paragraph, and then she read it again.
The Ironport Wolves will offer Mr. Stanton Telford a two-year player contract, effective on the signing of this agreement. In exchange, Mr. Telford will maintain his personal relationship with Ms. Amber Dunning for the duration of the contract. All members of the team and staff acknowledge this arrangement and agree not to disclose it.
Under that, a list of names.
Eleven players. Two assistant coaches.
Every signature was in blue ink, and one of them was Beck's.
