Chapter 14: Congratulations

Stanton crossed the studio and reached for the microphone.

The host slid it out of his reach.

"Sit down, Telford," he said. "You're on the air."

"This is an ambush."

"You walked in. Nobody sent for you."

"My wife is unwell," Stanton said, loud, to the whole city. "I'm here to take her home."

"I'm not your wife on this show," Lena said. "I'm Lena Sadler."

Amber stepped between them, smiling, with her phone still raised.

"Lena, sweetheart," she said. "Nobody's angry. We just want you to get help."

"You walked me to the elevator at the gala."

"I did."

"You called me the real MVP."

"And you are," Amber said sweetly. "You paid for so much of this."

The host's eyebrows rose.

The producer behind the glass held up a sign: KEEP TALKING.

"Say that again, Ms. Dunning," the host said. "For the listeners."

"I said Lena has always supported Stanton."

"No. The second part. What did she pay for?"

Amber's smile slipped, and then came back.

"Her contribution to his career is documented. Stanton's agent can speak to it."

"Her retainer," Lena said. "Sixty-four thousand dollars, out of my own savings, to the man who got him this contract."

"Then you were happy to pay it."

"I was happy to pay it for him."

"Line three," the producer said into the host's earpiece. "He says he has to be on."

"Go ahead, line three."

"Hi." The caller had a dry, tired voice. "I scouted for a Midwest club for fifteen years. I turned down Stanton Telford four times."
