Chapter 13: Partners

"Doctor," I said into the phone, "don't sign anything yet. Give me until Friday."

"Why Friday?"

"Because by Friday that offer is going to bounce."

He laughed, a little nervously, and said he'd wait.

I hung up the long-corded phone and stood there with the pencil in my fist.

Sandro came in from the float with the dog.

He took one look at my face and set down the paint can he was carrying.

"What?"

"Suite 114," I said. "I rented it. Four years ago. With Renato's money, from the Atwells restaurant. It's a mailbox next to a nail salon."

"Renato's buying the harbor."

"Renato's buying your customers. He said he'd buy the whole town. I thought he was talking."

The old man came in behind him, wiping his hands on a rag.

"Half the co-op got that letter," he said. "Lot of them are going to sign. Winter's long. Lobster's down."

"When do they meet?"

"Wednesday night. Fish house."

"Then I'm going."

Sandro looked at me.

"Annie, you're in witness protection."

"I'm in a boat shop in a borrowed flannel shirt. Everybody at that bar saw my face on the news Friday." I put the pencil behind my ear. "Hiding doesn't work in a town of a thousand people. Your dog knows it."

The dog thumped her tail.

The old man grinned for the first time since I'd known him.

On Tuesday I collected the yard's debts.

All four of them, in person.

The first man paid in cash at his kitchen table, mostly so I'd stop looking at his new snowmobile.

The second wrote a check and apologized.

The third tried to tell me the transom job was a gift.

"It wasn't a gift," I said. "It was a mistake. I'm the one who fixes mistakes now."

He paid.

The fourth was the harbor bar.
