Chapter 16: A Bed for Gia

I went down the stairs and out into the storm in my socks.

Sandro came behind me with a blanket and the dog.

Gia was halfway down the lane, up to her knees in a drift.

Her shoes were suede ankle boots with a heel.

Her lips were blue.

"I took a bus," she said, before I could say anything. "To Ellsworth. Then a cab. He wouldn't come down the hill."

"Where's Renato?"

"Boston. With the accountant. Till Sunday." Her teeth were chattering so hard I could barely understand her. "I told the driver I was going to the doctor."

Sandro wrapped the blanket around her.

She looked up at him.

"You got old," she said.

"You got pregnant," he said. "Come inside."

We put her by the woodstove in the old man's wool socks and Sandro's biggest sweater.

Her stomach was round and hard under it. Twenty weeks.

Her hands wouldn't stop shaking around the mug.

Sandro made her coffee. Two sugars.

She drank it and made a face.

"This is horrible."

"Thank you," he said.

I sat across the hatch-cover table from her.

I didn't touch her.

For a long time she just looked at the stove.

Then she reached into her coat pocket and put something on the table between us.

A thin gold band, a little bent.

A forty-dollar ring from a pawn shop on Broad Street.

"It was in your jewelry box," she said. "Under the diamonds. I used to try it on when I was little. You never knew."

I didn't pick it up.

Sandro, behind me, had gone completely still.

"I didn't bring it to say sorry," Gia said. "I know that doesn't fix anything."

"Then why?"

"Because he was going to sell the box. All of it. Your mother's earrings too." She swallowed. "He said you didn't need jewelry where you were going."

I picked up the ring.

It was warm from her pocket.
