Chapter 16: The Order

"Mama," Leandro said. "Thank you for keeping her here for me."

Agnese picked up the rolling pin and held it flat against her apron.

"I kept her for me," she said. "Take your men out of my kitchen."

"You asked me to come at nine."

"I asked you so that I could look at you."

Her voice did not rise.

The four men behind him shifted their feet, and one of them looked at the floor.

"Look at me, then," Leandro said, and spread his arms. "I'm your son."

"You are the man who sat on that stool and ate my food."

For the first time in five years I saw Leandro have no answer ready.

He turned to me instead.

"Come home today, Cece, and I withdraw the order. The boy stays with Delfina. You hold him whenever you like. You sit at my mother's table at Christmas with him on your lap."

"And if I don't?"

"Then a judge picks a Bastiani house for him, and you visit on Saturdays."

"Serve it," I said.

His eyes went to Teo, who had not moved from the doorway.

"I will," he said. "In front of your men, Teodoro. So nobody can say it was done in secret."

He dropped the folded order on the flour board and walked out with his four men behind him.

Agnese looked at the paper and then at me.

"Thursday," she said. "Bring the books."

Teo's family house in Elmwood Park stood behind an iron fence with a flight of six stone steps up to a green door.
