Chapter 23: The Wedding
Her mother cried before anyone had said a word.
It was a bright Saturday in June, and the old courthouse rotunda smelled of floor wax and lilacs.
There were no lilies.
Lena had said so to the florist twice.
She stood at the foot of the marble stairs in a cream dress cut loose under the bust, with her hand through her father's arm and a small, firm curve beneath the silk.
He wore the cedar suit.
He had been to the precinct, and then to a judge.
The judge had given him restitution and five years of probation, and the money had been paid in full before the hearing ended.
He had not said a word about who paid it.
"You look like your mother," he said now.
"Don't make me cry. The photographer will have a field day."
"I've got a steady hand today."
"You've got a terrible hand today."
"I know." His mouth shook. "Walk with me, Lena."
She walked with him.
The rotunda was full.
Her mother sat in the first row in blue, with a handkerchief to her face.
The bindery girls were there, in a row of mismatched hats.
Niko stood at the end of the aisle in a rented suit, ushering guests with the solemn face of a boy handed a job he could not fail.
Cassandra waited at the front in dark green, holding Lena's bouquet and trying not to smile.
Behind them sat the council captains with their wives.
In the last row, alone, on a folding chair by the door, sat an old man in a grey suit with a silver-headed cane across his knees.
