Chapter 20: Rain on the Deck
The rain came to Provincetown at nine that night, as promised, and it came hard.
Todd's mother had rolled her window up on Saturday morning and backed out of my lane without a word.
I told Brennan all of it on the pier at five.
He listened, and then he said, "Let's go to the boat."
We were still talking about it when the first drops hit the deck of the Dory Anne.
I stood in the cockpit in the dark, in the middle of the weather.
The mast hummed above me.
The rain came down in cold silver ropes onto my hair and shoulders and the little teak benches.
I opened my mouth to it and laughed.
Brennan stood at the foot of the mast with his shirt open and the water running down his chest.
"You're going to be soaked," he said.
"I'm going to be soaked."
"You'll be cold."
"Then warm me up," I said.
He came across the deck in two strides and pulled me against him.
His mouth was cold and wet and hot underneath, and the rain ran between our lips.
I got my fingers in his hair, and he lifted me by the thighs and put my back against the mast.
It was slick and hard and rain-cold through my shirt.
"Here?" he said.
"Here."
"On the deck? In the harbor?"
"Everyone's inside. It's a downpour. There's no one for a mile except the gulls," I said.
"The gulls will talk."
"Let them. I'm done being quiet."
He grinned against my neck.
He stripped my shirt up over my head, and my breasts came out into the rain.
He took one in his mouth and drew on it so hard I cried out.
The sound went up into the dark and was lost.
"Brennan."
