Chapter 12: Rendezvous

Three hundred people were in the Sublette County fairground hall on the Saturday of Rendezvous Days.

Every one of them stopped talking when Rod and I walked in.

Fiddles were tuning on the stage.

Long tables ran down both sides under paper lanterns.

At the far end the old iron stove stood lit, though it was July, with a small black iron lying in the coals.

Nobody had to tell me whose iron it was.

I wore a long-sleeved white shirt buttoned to the wrist, and Rod wore a clean canvas coat and held my hand.

Nobody had held a Reimer's hand in that hall since 1962.

Einar Reinholt stood on the stage in his silver-belly hat with the Book under his arm and a smile on his face.

"Friends," he said, and the hall quieted. "It grieves me to say what I have to say tonight."

Cade stood behind him, looking at his boots.

Dell stood at the end of the second table with her arms folded.
