Chapter 4: Silver on My Wrist

At six the next morning Anders walked me out to the training yard behind the lodge.

It was a flat field of packed snow ringed with pines, and a dozen young wolves were already running laps.

"A new shifter has to learn two things," Anders said. "How to change on purpose, and how to stop her biting people."

"I don't plan on biting people."

"That's what your wolf wants you to think."

He had me stand in the middle with my boots off.

I shifted on his count, and it hurt less than the night before.

I changed back and shifted again, and again, until my legs shook.

"Good," Anders said, and tossed me a towel. "You're quick. Tor took a month to get it down."

"Your brother's not here."

"He watches from the roof. He thinks I don't know."

I looked up at the lodge roof. There was nobody there, but the hair on my neck stood up anyway.

Then the laps stopped.

A lanky wolf my age walked across the yard toward us with three friends behind him.

I had seen him at the Gathering. He had been the one laughing.

"Look at that," he said, loudly. "The wolf with no smell."

"Back off," Anders said. Then he saw my face and added under his breath, "Actually, no, I'll let you handle this."

I didn't answer. I tied my hair back.

"You think you're special?" the lanky wolf said. "The Alpha looked at you for one second and spat. Nobody wants a lump that took twenty-four years to wake up."

"Say that again," I said.
