Chapter 28: What Carys Carried

I had Ewan's head in my lap and both hands pressed around the bolt, and I couldn't make the light come.

My wolf was frantic and my hands were useless, and the silver kept smoking.

"Hold him still," a voice said behind me. "Briony. Hold him."

Carys came down the last of the steps at a run, with Corbin a stride behind her.

She dropped to her knees on the other side of Ewan.

"Don't touch it," I said. "It burns."

"I know it burns."

It came out in one long, wet rip.

Carys screamed.

The smell of burned skin rose off her palms.

She threw the bolt across the sand and clutched her hands against her chest.

Ewan arched and dragged in a breath.

"Briony," he said hoarsely. "You're naked."

"You're alive."

"I noticed that too."

I laughed, and it came out as a sob, and I kissed his forehead hard.

Corbin took off his jacket and dropped it over my shoulders without a word.

Behind us, the sand scraped.

Corbin turned first.

"Bri."

I looked up.

Rafe was on his feet, swaying, with his broken arm hanging.

In his good hand he held the first guard's silver bolt, the one that had rolled down the steps.
