The Atrium Room of the Radcliffe Embarcadero held four hundred people for its sixty-first anniversary, and for the first time in three years I knew exactly where I would sit.

I took a chair at Table Three, near the stage, at the end of the row.

A camera on a boom swung over the crowd, and a banner said LIVE.

Nuala had told me there would be a stream.

She'd told me she was sorry about the rule, and I had told her it was a very small rule against a very large day.

Edmund Radcliffe sat at the head table with his hands folded.

He did not look at his wife, and she did not look at him.

I had never seen two people at one table so carefully aware of each other.
