Chapter 15: Red Water

Signe's POV

I came up the dike at first light and found them standing four feet apart, not speaking.

Soren wore a yellow slicker, and his face was gray.

Ansel faced him with his arms at his sides and his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

"You told her," Soren said again.

"Yes."

Soren nodded slowly.

He looked past Ansel at me, and for a moment I thought he would speak.

He didn't.

He turned and walked down the dike to the reel trucks and started them, one after another, without a word.

"He'll tell it tonight," Ansel said, beside me. "He won't stop."

"I know."

"He thinks the township will believe him over me."

I watched the pump house.

"They might."

"What will you do?"

"Stop him," I said. "Myself."

He took my hand.

The harvest began at seven.

I had never seen one.

I had grown up two miles from this marsh.

The only time I had stood in one of these beds was the day of the flood, and I had run home before I saw a berry picked.

The reels went in.

They were big, rolling beaters mounted on tractors, and they churned through the flooded beds and knocked the fruit off the vines.

The berries came up.

They rose from under the water in drifts, red and round and hard.

Each berry has a little pocket of air inside it, and that floats it.
