Chapter 18: Into the Water
Ansel's POV
On the third morning of the harvest, Soren took the other end of my boom.
It was five o'clock, and the bog was black and steaming in the cold.
Forty yards of floating cedar lay across the water between us, with the berries packed red against it.
The crew had already waded in.
They worked in a line, ten of them, and nobody was talking.
Nobody had talked to Soren since the barn.
A man he had bought beers for all summer had turned his back at the coffee urn.
The co-op buyer had stopped returning his calls.
He came down the bank in chest waders, with his jaw shaved close and his hands bare, and stepped into the water next to me.
I did not look at him.
I took the boom and began to walk.
He walked on the other end.
For an hour, we did not speak.
The reel trucks roared behind us, and the berries came up under the cedar in a thick, bright drift, and I pulled the line toward the pump the way I had pulled it every autumn since I was fifteen.
The water came to my thighs.
It was cold, and clean, and it did not hold on.
I had stopped waiting for it to.
Around six, a berry rope slipped.
It was nothing, a knot that came loose, and the end of the boom swung wide.
Soren caught it.
He held the loose line in both hands, and he stood in the water looking down the length of it at me.
Then he waded across the gap.
He stopped at arm's length.
He held out the rope.
"Your line," Soren said.
