Chapter 20: The Last Move
The relay's alarm woke me at ten past three.
It carried up the path to my open window, a sharp, rising whine.
Velun was already sitting up on my bedroom floor, in the long canvas trousers, with his eyes lit.
"Something is moving the buoy," he said.
"Moving it?"
"The chain is being cut. I can feel it through the line."
I had my father's boots on before my feet were fully awake.
We ran down the path in the dark, past the cottage, past the dock lamp, and out to the end of the boards.
The little red-and-white buoy at the inlet mouth was rocking wrong.
Beside it, in the grey water, a skiff sat with no running lights.
A man stood in it, bent over the chain, with a long pair of bolt cutters.
A white beam of light came on, swept the water, and found my face.
"Hello, Sorcha," Brent called, across the black. "Beautiful night."
The cutters bit down.
The chain parted with a sound.
The buoy lurched, the light on its top swung, and the current began to take it toward the rocks at the mouth.
"That's the channel marker!" I shouted. "Brent! Half the fleet comes in past that on Saturday!"
