Chapter 22: Lights Off Again

I couldn't see him at all.

I couldn't see my own hand on the lamp.

The rain was pounding on the tarp so loud.

"Where are you?" I said.

"Row F."

"Of course you are."

"It's the only dry seat."

I almost laughed.

I didn't want to.

"Don't come up here," I said.

"I won't."

I heard him sit back down.

I sat down too, right where I was, on the painted porch.

The boards were still warm from the day.

It was like the screen door.

His voice in the dark, and no face.

Only this time I knew exactly whose voice it was.

"You didn't have to do that," he said. "With Hal."

"I didn't do it for you."

"I know. That's why it worked."

The thunder rolled off toward the county line.

"Ask me," he said.

"Ask you what?"

"Anything. The lights are off. Nobody's filming. Ask me anything and I'll answer it."

I pulled my knees up.

"What's your name?"

He was quiet for a second.

"Jasper Larkspur," he said. "My mother calls me Jas. Nobody else has in a long time."

"Why did you lie to me?"

I heard him breathe out.

"The first night, I didn't think I was lying," he said. "I typed 'I'm not him,' and I meant it. I didn't want to be him. He was a guy who moved his mouth on stage while a tape played. I'd been him for two years and I hated every minute."
