Chapter 16: The Lord's Last Order
The healer said the lung would not last the winter, and the arrow had not helped.
Pyo lay in a room Sun-ok had given him in the east wing, on a real bed with a wool blanket.
He looked smaller in it than he had on his mat.
The blood on his pillow was bright.
He sent everyone out but Ja-heon.
"Sit," he said.
Ja-heon sat on the floor by the bed, and Pyo laughed and coughed it away.
"You are a very large child."
"Yes, Lord."
"Don't call me that."
Pyo's hand moved on the blanket.
"I sent for you because I am out of time, and there is a thing I should have done when you were twenty."
He pulled a lacquer box from under the pillow.
Inside lay a loop of thin red silk, faded to the color of dried plum bark.
Ja-heon knew it.
He had worn it from the day Pyo tied it to his wrist.
At twenty-five he had cut it off to play a sellsword with no past, and Pyo had kept it.
"This is the oath," Pyo said.
"The Cult binds its own with a knot that only the Lord can untie.
"You were six, and hungry, and I told you it was a game.
"It was a leash, Ja-heon, and I was the one who tied it."
His good eye shone.
"I would like to untie it, if you will let an old man try."
Ja-heon could not answer.
He held out his left wrist.
Pyo took a small knife from the box and sawed through the silk with great care.
It parted.
The two ends fell into Ja-heon's palm.
Nothing happened.
He had expected a bell, or a pain.
