Chapter 24: Pitcher at Midwinter
By midwinter the frame of the new cabin stood on the point.
Thirty wolves had come with saws and ladders the week after the Stone, and nobody had asked them to.
I carried a thermos down the road in the blue morning with my breath smoking.
Veikko was on the roof beam in his shirtsleeves, hammering.
He had been there since dawn every day for nine days.
He saw me and stopped.
I climbed the ladder halfway, held out the thermos, and he took it in both hands.
"Coffee," he said.
"It's bad coffee."
"It's coffee."
He drank.
His eyes were red from the cold, or from something else.
"This isn't forgiveness," I said.
"I know."
"It's coffee."
"I know," my father said. "Thank you."
I climbed down.
Behind me, I heard him start to hammer again, a little more slowly, and I didn't turn around.
That night the Longhouse blazed.
Every lamp was lit, and the great hearth roared.
The long table ran the length of the hall, with two hundred wolves along it in their good clothes.
