Chapter 6: Court Dinner

"The Archive opens at dawn," Caspian said. "Tonight is the Midsummer dinner."

"I'm not going to a dinner."

"You don't have to."

"Stonefall will be there."

"Yes."

He leaned on the library table with his hands flat on the wood and gave me the same look he'd given the lawn.

He wasn't going to ask me to go.

That was the term.

I stood in front of the mirror in the guest room for ten minutes in a dress the housekeeper had found, dark green and plain, with a high collar.

My eyes looked different.

There was a thin ring of gold around each grey iris that hadn't been there yesterday.

I went down the stairs on my own.

Caspian was waiting at the bottom in a black jacket and no tie.

He offered his arm and didn't say anything.

I took it.

The hall had a hundred and forty people in it, Alphas and their wives and their heirs, all at long tables under hanging lamps.

The talk stopped when we came in, and then it started again very loud.

I felt every eye in the room on me.

"Walk like you own the floor," Caspian murmured, close to my ear. "It's my floor. You're allowed."

"Is that your advice?"

"It's the only advice I have."

We crossed the hall together.

His arm under my hand was steady, and I leaned on it harder than I meant to.

I saw them before they saw me.

The Stonefall Alpha sat at the third table, with his plate pushed away.

Beside him was Brant, in a dark jacket with his hair combed, and the woman in the green dress from the lawn sat at his other side, laughing too brightly at something nobody had said.

Brant looked up.

The smile went off his face.
