Chapter 5: I Take Back My Name

I did not decide to move.

I was just between the knife and the girl, and the silver chain was breaking off my wrists in pieces.

The links rang on the stone.

The moonlight in my veins had eaten through them.

"Stand aside," Gareth said.

His arm was still raised, and the blade shook slightly.

"She didn't do it."

"You are an oath-breaker in my ring. Your word is void."

"Her word is the only one that's true," I said. "She carried a cup. Somebody else filled it."

"The Alpha judges the Alpha's blood."

"The Alpha's blood is lying on that plank."

I pointed at Tilda without looking.

Gareth's face went hard.

"Guards. Remove her."

Nobody moved.

The guards looked at one another and at the three Alphas by the stones.

Rowan had not shifted his stance at all, but the old Alpha with the cane had taken a step forward.

"Your word is void," Gareth said again, louder, to the pack. "A Luna who abandons her post is not a Luna. Everyone knows the law."

"Then I'm not your Luna," I said.

The ring went quiet.

I had not planned to say it.

Once I said it, I knew it was the only true thing I had left.

"Linnea Hargrave," Gareth said. "Careful."

"My name is Linnea Farrow."

I said it clearly, so that the old wolves in the back would hear.

"I was Farrow before I was yours, and I'm Farrow again."

I put my hand over my heart, where twenty-five years of mate-bond sat under my ribs.

"Under the Goddess and in front of three Alphas, I reject you, Gareth Hargrave. I reject you as my mate, and I reject you as my Alpha."
