Chapter 22: The Heir

I went to Nan Keane's kitchen at dusk, and the key was under the blue pot.

Kari wanted to come in with me.

I told her to wait in the car with Dominic and keep the engine running.

The house was warm.

A kettle sat on the stove, steaming, and on the table were two cups and a plate of plain shortbread.

Maeve sat in Nan's chair with her braid over her shoulder.

"You can eat that," she said, and nodded at the plate. "It's from a box. I didn't make anything."

"I'm not hungry."

"No. I wouldn't be."

I stayed standing.

"The hearing is Monday," I said. "A camera truck was booked for it before I had ever eaten a bite."

"Yes."

"You booked it."

"Yes."

"Did you send the video to my mother?"

"Yes."

"Did you tell Brooke Tillman to hand me the plate?"

"Yes."

She answered every question the same way, in a low even voice.

My knees went soft, and I sat down across from her.

"Why?"

She turned her cup around on the saucer.

"Do you remember the road?" she said. "We were nine. Mom had sent us to the corner for milk."

"I remember you screaming."

"You pushed me out of the way. I was in front of the car and you shoved me, and it hit you instead." She said it flatly. "Nan came running out of the house, and the first thing she did was look at me."

"Maeve."

"Not at you. She looked at me and saw I was fine. Then she looked at you, bleeding in the gutter, and she knew."

"Knew what?"

"That the bowl was going to me." Her mouth twisted. "It had to be a Keane. Her mother was an eater, she was an eater, and I was the next. She'd been waiting for me to turn nine. It's when the sin-eater is chosen."
