Chapter 11: The Stall

The ballroom of the Historic Mill Museum glittered with four hundred people in black, and Teddy hated every one of them.

He stood at Anders's side in a tuxedo that had cost more than his rent.

He held a glass of something golden and watched the room watch him.

"Smile," Anders murmured. "You're my guest."

"I'm your what?"

"Guest. It's a perfectly good word."

"It's a word for the man you're paying," Teddy said.

"Teddy."

"Say it quietly. They're staring."

They were.

Women in gowns tilted their heads, and men with silver hair measured the cut of his borrowed jacket.

A thin man in a camel overcoat came through the crowd with his hand out, wearing a smile.

"Anders. And this must be the young man."

"Kellan Voight, my cousin. Teddy Gallagher."

"Teddy." Kellan's handshake was dry and brief. "I've heard so much. A history student, I'm told. And a bartender."

"Both."

"How industrious. And how did you two meet?"

"At a bar," Teddy said.

"Of course."

He said it so pleasantly that Teddy's skin crawled.

Kellan's eyes went to the knot of his tie, then to his throat, and a little line formed between his brows.

"Enjoy the evening," he said, and drifted off.
