The stack had been sixty cedar logs, cut and peeled and seasoned two summers, and next October they would have been the boom.
Now it was a black heap in the yard, still ticking, with a ring of scorched sand around it.
Reuben stood at the edge of the heat in his shirtsleeves with a shovel in his hand.
The Skit Branch fire crew had come and gone.
The house was untouched, but the porch rail was blistered, and the whole yard stank of wet char and kerosene.
I stood beside him and said nothing.
He did not speak either.
He stood very still, with the scars white on his forearms in the cold light.
I took his hand.
His fingers were stiff around the shovel handle, and I pried them loose one at a time and held his palm against my coat.
"Three years," he said at last. "I cut those in the rain."
"I know."
"The pack's boom was in that pile," he said.
"I know. Look at me."
He looked.
"Whose scent is it?" I said.
"There's a wolf's track at the woodpile," he said. "And the kerosene can was left by the shed."
