Chapter 9: Noreen's Table
My mother walked into the packing shed with a duffel bag over one shoulder and her church shoes in her hand.
I was sitting on a steel table in a sweater with nothing else on.
Reuben was standing in front of me, buckling his belt, with his shirt buttoned wrong.
Noreen Sooy looked at the table, and the little purple box on the floor, and the two of us.
She did not blink.
"Supper is at six," she said. "Bring him."
She dropped the duffel on a crate and set the shoes on top of it.
"Your own clothes," she said. "I'm not having a daughter of mine in a Stray's flannel at my table."
"Mom."
"Lucinda, I have been a woman for fifty-five years. Put your pants on."
She went out and sat in her truck with the radio on, loudly, until we came out.
Supper was pork roast and mashed potatoes and my mother's cranberry relish, which she makes with orange peel and too much sugar.
