Chapter 19: The Night Before
I went to his penthouse at nine that night, because Winnie's couch was lonely and my husband was a fool.
The doorman touched his cap.
Alistair opened the door in his shirtsleeves with a glass of water in his hand, and I saw him decide not to say anything stupid.
"I have terms," I said.
"Go ahead."
"You sleep on the couch until I say otherwise. I take the bed."
"Yes."
"You answer anything I ask, tonight, with no editing."
"Yes."
"You don't touch me until I say."
His throat moved.
"Yes," he said.
I walked past him into the living room, and he put the glass down on the table.
We sat at opposite ends of the long sofa with a cushion between us.
"What would you have said at the stall?" I asked. "Five years ago."
"I'd practiced two days. Would you have dinner with me."
"And?"
"I said, how much for the white ones."
"You paid a hundred dollars for twelve stems."
"I'd have paid a thousand to keep you talking."
"And the forty-four million?"
"That bought a bad feeling I'd been carrying since July." He looked at me straight. "It didn't buy anything from you."
"Reuben will say we were together before the gala."
