Chapter 15: Who Signed

The bank on Dorchester Avenue had the same marble counter and the same teller at window two, and Maeve walked past both.

Waylon was already waiting by the glass office at the back, in a clean suit, holding a folder against his chest.

He did not meet her eyes.

The loan officer who shook her hand was a tired man in his forties with a pen clipped to his shirt.

"Ms. Prendergast. You said on the phone you hold a power of attorney for your father."

"I do." Maeve laid the lawyer's papers on his desk. "And I wanted to ask who signed his name on your second loan."

The officer's pen stopped moving.

He opened a file and turned it around so she could see.

"The mortgage on the Quincy house was modified in March. Your mother signed as borrower, and as your father's guardian, with a letter she supplied saying so." He touched a line near the bottom. "This is his signature, as co-owner."

Maeve looked at it.

Her father's S had a long tail that curled under the whole name.

This one curled too, but it curled too carefully, and the pen had stopped and started twice.

"He didn't sign that," she said.

"Ms. Prendergast..."

"He was in a care home with two strokes behind him. There was never a guardianship. No judge ever signed anything." She kept her tone flat. "You can ask him yourself. He's clear most mornings."

The officer read the lawyer's papers again, slower.

When he looked up, he had stopped being polite and started being afraid.

"If the co-owner's signature isn't his," he said, "then this loan isn't secured on the house the way we recorded it."

"What does that mean for the bank?"

"It means somebody in this building needs to call our fraud department. And it means whoever put his name on this document is in serious trouble."
