Chapter 9: What the House Paid For

Niall drove her home in a pickup that smelled of rope and coffee.

He didn't talk, and she was grateful.

Her building was dark except for the lamp over the front door.

Waylon was sitting on the steps with his tie pulled loose and a bottle between his shoes.

Niall parked across the street and turned off the engine. "Want me to come up?"

"Stay here," Maeve said. "I want him to say it where somebody can hear."

"I'm not going anywhere."

She got out and crossed the street.

Waylon looked up.

His eyes were red, and his suit jacket was balled up beside him on the stone.

"I got put on leave," he said. "The founder's sending somebody to clean out my desk Monday."

"He said your office, nine o'clock. That's not leave."

"It will be when I'm done." Waylon laughed, and it was an ugly sound. "You got what you wanted. Are you happy?"

"No."

"You humiliated me in front of every person I work with."

"You were in my bed with my sister."

"Your mother told me you'd be fine." He pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. "She said you were the strong one. You'd take it and you'd keep paying."

Maeve stood very still on the sidewalk.

"Say that again."

"Your mother," Waylon said. "Why do you think I didn't leave years ago? I'd have walked out of that apartment the first year, if it was only you."
