Chapter 11: The Board Votes
On Thursday the hospital board met in the big room on the second floor, and every folding chair was taken.
I had never seen the town so quiet.
People stood along the walls with their coats on.
Some of them I knew from the nursery, and some I only knew by their faces from church.
Two rows behind me sat the woman from the pharmacy who had filmed the first clip.
She had brought her sister, and she held her phone in her lap with both hands.
Luke sat on my left in his good suit.
Bernice sat on my right with a legal pad.
I did not turn around.
I knew Alan was somewhere at the back, because Bernice had said so.
He had come in late and stood against the door with his cap in his fist.
He had slept in his truck for four nights.
The chairman of the board was a retired judge with a white mustache and a very slow voice.
He read the statement from the administrator into the record, and he read the log of the cabinet key.
Then he asked whether any member of the public wished to speak to the matter.
The woman from the pharmacy stood up first.
"I was there," she said. Her voice trembled, and then it didn't. "That nurse called a little boy a bastard to his face, and then she put her hands on his mother. I want it in your minutes that eighteen people stood in that room and not one of us stopped it. I'm ashamed of that. But I'm not ashamed of what I filmed."
A man in the second row said, "Hear, hear."
Two more people spoke after her.
A retired teacher said she had been a patient on that ward for twenty years and had never seen anything like it.
A young father said his own daughter had been bitten by a spider in the spring and treated in six minutes by the same staff.
