Chapter 20: The Dispatch Window
The woman in the green jacket stopped in front of Shelby's chair.
Shelby looked up, and every bit of color left her face.
"Mom," she said. "I told you not to come."
"You told me a lot of things this week."
The woman's voice was low and rough from years of calling out the same orders into a radio.
"Stand up," she said.
Shelby stood.
I thought I knew what would happen, and I was wrong.
The woman put both arms around her daughter's neck and held on hard, and Shelby's hands came up slowly and caught the back of the jacket.
Neither of them said anything.
In the third row, somebody blew a nose.
Then the woman let go, stepped back, and slapped Shelby across the face, once, not hard.
"That's for the boy," she said.
"Yes, ma'am," Shelby whispered.
"And that is the last time I do it."
The side door opened.
The three nurses came back and took their seats, and the one in the middle did not look at her papers.
"The board finds that Ms. Keane knowingly delayed emergency treatment to a child," she said. "Her license is revoked, with no right to reapply for five years. The matter goes to the district attorney with the board's recommendation."
Shelby stood with her hand still on her cheek.
"I accept it," she said.
"You have the right to appeal."
"I won't."
The gavel came down, and the auditorium broke into noise.
I stayed in my seat and watched Shelby's mother turn around.
She looked up the aisle at my husband, who had not moved from the back.
"Alan Fennimore," she said.
