Chapter 9: Four Hundred a Month
Alan was sitting at the kitchen table when I got home, with his hands flat on the wood and a cold cup of coffee in front of him.
He had not shaved.
Bernice had driven me back from the hospital in silence, with Luke's car behind us the whole way, and now she stood in the doorway behind me with her purse still on her arm.
"Teddy's with the neighbor," I said. "We have an hour."
"Glenda."
"What have you been sending her mother?"
I had planned to say it differently.
I had planned to say it calmly, sitting down.
It came out hard and fast.
Alan's hands closed.
"Money," he said.
"How much, and for how long?"
"Four hundred a month." He looked at the table. "Since a year after Luke was born."
The math ran through my head without meaning to.
Twenty-six years, and a hole in the ledger I had kept for him every Sunday night since I was nineteen.
I had noticed the missing money and I had blamed the truck's repairs.
"Who is she?"
"She worked the dispatch window at the depot in Macon." He swallowed. "I was gone a lot, Glenda. You were home with the baby, and it was a bad year. I was twenty-three, I was stupid."
"You slept with her."
"Once. Maybe twice."
Behind me Bernice sucked in a breath through her nose.
"And?" I said.
"And she said she was pregnant."
The kitchen clock ticked.
"She said it was mine. I said it couldn't be. She said she'd tell you if I didn't help her out, so I helped. I figured it would stop when the kid was grown."
