Chapter 28: Mother and Son

Mateo turned off his engine.

For a moment none of us moved.

The pink sign buzzed over the lot.

A truck went by on the highway.

Then the Lexus door opened and Pilar got out.

She was in a camel coat over silk pajamas, with no lipstick.

I had never seen her without lipstick.

She looked smaller.

She looked fifty-five.

"Stay in the truck," Mateo said to me quietly.

"No," I said.

He looked at me.

"No more doors," I said. "Remember?"

He nodded once.

We got out together.

Pilar watched us cross the lot, side by side.

"I'd like to talk to my son," she said. "Alone."

"You can talk to me with her here," Mateo said. "Or you can go."

Pilar's mouth tightened.

Then she let it go.

"Fine." She pulled her coat tighter. "Your stepfather filed for divorce on Monday. Did she tell you?"

"Yes."

"I'm living at a hotel by the airport. In a room with a painting of a cactus." She laughed, short.

"Thirty years in Houston. Ten months in Laredo. A cactus."

"What do you want, Mom?"

"I want to make you an offer."

"No."

"You haven't heard it."

"I don't need to."

"Mateo." Her voice cracked a little, and I couldn't tell if it was real.

"The DA wants you on Monday. They want to know what you saw. You lived in that house."
