Chapter 30: Under the Oak
We walked up to the oak on the first clear Sunday of December.
The snow lay shin deep on the east lane, and the sky above the ridge was a hard, pale blue.
Nels carried a thermos.
I carried a folded sheet of paper in my coat pocket, soft at the creases from being opened and closed.
The oak had dropped everything, and its bare branches were furred with frost.
Haakon's stone stood under it with a cap of snow.
I brushed the snow off the top with my glove and set my hand on the granite, which was cold enough to ache.
"Hi," I said.
Nels stood a pace behind me with his cap in both hands.
"I brought him," I said to the stone. "In case you were wondering. You weren't going to like this part, but he's in the family now."
I heard Nels's breath catch, and then a short, helpless laugh.
"He'd have hated it," he said.
"He'd have made a speech."
"He'd have made a toast with the wrong glass."
