Chapter 12: Twice

His penthouse was dark, and the whole city lay under the windows.

I stood in the middle of his living room with his coat still on my shoulders.

I had been dead once, and I had not been touched by anyone who meant it.

"That's twice," I said.

Malcolm had been hanging his keys on a hook by the door.

He went still.

"Twice what?"

"You said you wait until people ask you twice. In the car, you said not tonight." I turned around. "It's tonight again. I'm asking."

"Lena."

"I'm not shaking. Look at me."

He looked.

My hands were steady.

I shrugged his coat off and let it fall.

I reached behind me and pulled down the zipper of my dress, slowly, and stepped out of it.

I stood there in my slip and my bare feet.

"I don't want to be rescued," I said. "I want you to stop being careful."

He crossed the floor.

His hands went into my hair, and his mouth came down on mine, and it was nothing like the kiss in the car.

It was deep and hard and slow, and he held my head still and took what he wanted from my mouth.

I made a sound I had never made in either life.

He heard it.

His whole body shook against me.

"Say it again," he said against my lip.

"Malcolm."

"Again."

"Malcolm, please."

He picked me up.

My legs went around his waist and I felt how hard he was through his trousers, against me, right where I needed it.

He carried me into the bedroom and laid me across the bed, and stood over me with his shirt half unbuttoned and his chest heaving.

"Rule one," he said, rough. "No shares, no deals, no questions about your money."
