Chapter 14: The Rehearsal

Shane lifted his phone and let it ring off.

"Good morning, Malcolm," he said. "Brynn, baby, you left the house in your pajamas."

Brynn's whole body locked.

She had heard nothing wrong in his voice, and neither had I, and that was what scared me.

"I heard a text," Shane said. "Something about a terrace. I don't know what game you two are playing."

"It isn't a game," I said.

"It's something." He smiled at me, sad and fond. "You've got her saying things, Lena. She was up all night crying about it. I'll take her home."

Malcolm stepped into the hall and stood between us and the elevator.

"She can stay."

"She's my fiancée."

"She's an adult."

Shane looked at Malcolm's hands.

They were at his sides, and they were not relaxed.

"If you touch me, I'll call the police and say you struck me in your own building," Shane said softly. "Eighty people at the rehearsal on Thursday will hear you've been seen hitting the groom."

Nobody moved.

Brynn took one step toward him.

"It's all right," she said, in a small flat voice. "I'll go."

"Brynn."

"I'm tired, Lena. I'm so tired."

She gave me one look as she went by.

It said the wire was still on.

Thursday night the Caldwell hotel ballroom held eighty guests and a string quartet, and Shane had never looked better.

He worked the room in a charcoal suit with his hand in the small of Brynn's back.

She wore white and a fixed smile.

Under her left collar was a pin no bigger than a coat button, and it was the only thing in the room I was afraid of.

Malcolm sat beside me at the long head table.
