Chapter 18: The List

I rapped on the window of the shuttle with one knuckle.

Alister came awake with a jerk and hit the horn with his elbow, and a pair of crows left the porch roof.

I held up a mug of coffee.

He rolled down the window and took it in both hands.

"Your daughter went into town for eggs," I said. "Her fiance went with her. They'll be an hour."

"Did she say that on purpose?"

"She said it with her eyebrows."

He looked at the cabin, and then at me, and I saw him decide to say nothing at all.

He followed me inside.

The kitchen had a table with four chairs and a view of the water.

I made him sit.

"You said you'd tell me all of it," I said. "I'm not waiting for a finale. Start at the start."

He drank half the coffee and set it down.

Then he took his old wallet out of his back pocket.

From behind his driver's license he drew a folded sheet of yellow paper.

"Anne wrote this in the hospital," he said. "A few weeks before the end. She told me to read it when I was ready."

"Were you?"

"I carried it for six years and read it twice."

He unfolded it and laid it on the table between us.

The handwriting was slanted and neat, and the ink had gone brown at the creases.

I put on my glasses.

The list had ten lines.

Number one said, Sell the lake house, you hate it.
