Chapter 21: Walkthrough

I looked down at the note, staring at the boy's age.

"He's going to do it to Trey on the same stage," I said. "Right after the final, win or lose."

"Win or lose," Toni said. "He'll have the kid waiting in the tunnel either way."

"Trey doesn't know."

"Nobody knows. It isn't public until Monday."

She closed the laptop and looked at me.

"You're going to tell him," she said.

"Yes."

"The day before you play him."

"The day before Moberly does it to him."

"Joel, think about it like a coach for one second. If he finds out tomorrow, he plays scared or he plays angry."

"I know."

"Either one helps you."

"I know that too."

I rubbed my eyes with my good hand.

"If I don't tell him, he finds out on that stage with fourteen thousand phones in his face," I said.

"I've been that kid twice now."

Toni didn't argue.

She tapped the laptop twice and said, "Then tell him early, so it isn't a play."

On Saturday both teams got an hour each to walk the stage at the Moberly Motors Arena.

Crown had the first hour.
