Chapter 20: The Apartment

Levi's POV

I'd asked her up to the apartment on Friday night, and she'd said, Sunday, and I spent two days looking at the place.

It was one room over the shop, with a bed under an army blanket and a hot plate.

The window looked onto the salvage yard, and two paperbacks I had never finished sat on the sill.

I washed the dishes on Saturday.

There were three.

On Sunday morning Orlin put on his church jacket and stood in the bay with his cane, waiting for me to come.

I didn't go.

The church had pulled its account on the Monday after the diner.

The secretary called at eight, to say the elders had voted, and she was sorry.

The church would use a company in Newton from now on.

That was a dozen calls a month.

It was the bus, the parsonage, the widows' cars, the elders' pickups in the ditch every January.

It had been my grandfather's best customer since before I was born.

I drove out to the parsonage on Tuesday and stood on the step with my cap in my hand.

The pastor opened the door.

I said what I'd said to Kent, with the same words.

"I knew she was married. I did it anyway. That's mine."

He looked at me a long time.

"I know, son," he said. "That's why the elders voted."
