Chapter 4: The Rehearsal Dinner

The rehearsal dinner was held at the Vanderberg Hotel, in the one ballroom my father still kept open.

Two weddings in one garden meant two grooms, two cakes and one long table of people who owed my father money.

Wayne sat at my sister's side and was wonderful.

I had forgotten how good he was in a room.

He laughed in the right places and asked the old men about their boats.

He kept one hand on the back of Reese's chair, and the whole table looked at them and thought, what a nice couple.

Reese leaned into him, glowing.

She had never looked happier, and I knew her well enough to know it was all of it real.

She wanted him exactly as he was in this room.

She had never seen him in any other.

"Perfect," I said under my breath.

"Pardon?"

Giles sat to my right with his water glass untouched.

He had not said ten words to me since the hallway, and I had not minded.

"Nothing," I said. "I'm watching the show."

"It's a good one."

"It always is."

He turned his head, just slightly.

"Always?"

"Figure of speech."

He let it go, and I was grateful and a little annoyed that he'd let it go so easily.

Across the table, a man from my father's board lifted his glass.

He was sixty, red-faced, and on his third bourbon, and he had been waiting all evening to be funny.

"To the grooms," he said. "One with a bank account and one with a wrench."
