Chapter 15: Wine Vault
The trunk held one book.
It was a fat black ledger with my grandfather's handwriting on every page.
On the inside cover he had written, "For Ingrid, when she is ready."
I sat on the cot in a blanket and read it by the stove while Sebastian dressed.
The first thing I found was a page headed "THE TITHE."
"A bond runs one way until it is sealed," my grandfather wrote. "The Heir grows, the Sire pays."
"A sealed bond runs both ways. The Heir's blood returns what the Sire gave."
"Do not seal it until you are certain. It cannot be unsealed."
I read it twice, out loud.
Sebastian stood very still by the door.
"Certain of what?" I asked.
"Of each other." He picked up my coat and held it open. "Keep reading."
The second page was a list of numbers and a short note in a shakier hand.
"Thirty wards. The Councilor has taken thirty. The register is in the cellar vault of the Great Hall, behind the third cask."
