Chapter 19: The Dressing Room
Birdie zipped me into the gown at nine-thirty and burst into tears.
It was the deep blue of the old harbor flag.
It had a fitted bodice, a square neckline and a long skirt that moved.
My grandmother's pearls lay on my collarbone.
My hair was up in a knot, and nothing hid my mole or the two small lines at the corners of my eyes.
I looked like a woman who owned a wharf.
"You look like Odessa," Birdie said, sniffing.
"Don't make me cry. The mascara cost sixty dollars."
"I'm not crying. It's a hay fever situation."
She kissed my cheek and wiped her own with the back of her wrist.
Then she left me alone in the long dressing room off the old cotton exchange hall.
The room was all mirrors and gilt.
Through the door I could hear the ballroom filling up.
A hundred guests had been told to come at ten for the reading of Odessa Calhoun's trust.
I stood in front of the tall glass and looked at myself.
The door opened behind me and closed.
Auden stood against it in a black suit, a white shirt and a charcoal tie.
