Chapter 10: The Dark

"Not here," I said.

A thousand people were holding their breath, and I had never been so aware of my own pulse.

Clark looked at me for a long second.

"All right," he said.

He put the microphone down on the podium, took my hand, and walked me down the steps and out through a crowd that was too stunned to film.

Laney caught my sleeve at the doors.

"Take my uncle's cabin," she whispered, and pushed a brass key into my palm. "Lake road, third mailbox, the one with the fish. Go. I'll handle the house."

I kissed her cheek and ran.

My old Civic coughed twice and started.

Clark folded himself into the passenger seat with his knees against the glovebox.

Neither of us said a word for the first ten miles.

The sky over the lake was black by the time we pulled into the gravel drive, and thunder was already rolling across the water.

The cabin was small, made of logs, with a stone fireplace and a couch with a blanket on it that smelled like cedar.

Clark stood in the doorway while I found the lamp.

"You said not here," he said. "Now we're not there. What calls?"

I opened my mouth to say it all.

Instead he held up a hand.

"Wait."

"Clark."

"Please. I just stood on a stage and told a thousand strangers a thing I've never told anyone but my mother. I watched Brooke take money to ruin me." His voice was hoarse. "Give me tonight. Whatever it is, I'll hear it in the morning."
