Chapter 15: Public

"With me," Reed said.

He said it once, evenly, to the whole room.

He did not raise his voice, and he did not look at Colby.

He looked at the woman who ran the committee, nodded, and sat back down.

That was all.

Nine people turned to stare at me, and I stared back, because I had told the whole floor the same thing two days ago.

"Thank you, Mr. Callender," the woman at the head said, very drily. "I think the committee can take that as read."

She turned to me.

"Ms. Brandvold, I'm going to break the one-question rule. I'd like to hear the Calder case from the person who counted it."

"From the beginning?" I said.

"From wherever it's true."

So I told them.

I did not use slides, and I did not use notes.

I told them why the Street's nineteen hours was wrong: the Street counted the time a train sat on the schedule, and I counted the time a track stood empty.

I told them the south fence, the foreman, the eighty-one departures, and the two minutes in March when a switching crew came in short and the yard stopped moving.

The man with the reading glasses asked what happened to the number when a freight was late.
