Chapter 17: The Leak

Calder Rail had closed Thursday at eleven dollars and opened Friday at thirteen, and I had done nothing.

Gwen met me at the elevator with her laptop open and her glasses pushed up into her hair.

"Conference room four," she said. "Now. Don't talk to anyone."

She shut the door behind us and turned the laptop around.

It was another gray log, another column of file names.

"The committee had IT lock Colby's accounts at 11:40 yesterday," she said.

"But they only locked his office laptop. His phone was still logged in to the firm drive."

"Gwen."

"At 8:07 yesterday morning, he pushed the whole Calder file to an outside address."

I read the line.

8:07.

I knew exactly where I'd been at 8:07.

I had been standing at the turnstile with my hands at my sides.

Forty people had watched me while Colby told a guard to call the police.

He had been holding a coffee in one hand and sending my life away with the other.

"He sent it while I was standing three feet from him," I said.

"He did it while he was telling the guard what to do."

"Who got it?"

"I ran the address. It's a fund that's been circling Calder for a year."
