Chapter 22: Twenty-Nine
He opened the door of 1412 in his shirtsleeves, with the sleeves rolled to the elbow and no tea in his hand.
"You came," he said.
"I counted too."
"You counted?"
"It's in my phone. Twenty-nine nights, with the date next to every one."
I walked past him into the room.
"Don't look so surprised. I count things."
He shut the door and leaned on it.
"I've been trying to find a way to say this for a week," he said.
"Then say it badly."
"I don't want it to be thirty."
I turned around.
"That's the napkin, Reed. That's the deal. I wrote it."
"The napkin says either of us can end it. It doesn't say it has to end."
"It says thirty nights."
"It does."
"It's a recovery plan," I said. "A recovery plan is something you finish. You get well, and you leave."
"Jacqueline."
"I'm well. I'm better than I've been in years. I'm not the woman in the hotel bar who couldn't stop shaking."
"I know."
"So what's left to recover?"
