Chapter 24: Night Thirty-One
I unfolded it on the white tablecloth, in front of fourteen cameras, and smoothed it flat with the side of my hand.
Reed looked down at it, and the shed seemed to hold its breath.
Blue ink, a ring of tea, a crease through the middle where I had carried it for a month.
I took the pen out of my blazer pocket.
It was the blue pen from the Ansonia Court bar, the one Reed had signed with.
I had taken it back when we left.
I found rule four.
Four. Thirty nights.
I crossed it out with one straight line.
Reed's whole body went still beside me.
"Jacqueline."
"Don't talk," I said. "I'm writing."
I wrote underneath it, in the same fast blue hand.
Then I turned the napkin around and slid it down the table, the way I had slid it down the bar.
He read it.
His mouth moved on the words, once, and he put his hand flat over his eyes.
Four. No number.
"Is that a rule?" he said, through his fingers.
"It's an amendment."
"What does it mean?"
"It means rule five stays, because I still want to be able to leave any room I'm in," I said.
