Chapter 24: The Ferry Crossing
After two days of hard riding south, the old ferry was still tied up at Rushcross, exactly where she had left it.
Somebody had patched the hull, and the pole stood waiting in its notch, worn smooth by nine years of her hands.
Linnea walked down the mud bank in her bare feet at dawn, with the river fog lifting off the water.
"It's a flat-bottomed raft with a rail," Marek said from the bank, in the voice of a man facing a firing squad.
"Where does it keep the rest of the boat?"
"There isn't a rest of the boat," said Odell happily, and he was already aboard, coiling rope.
"I'm a lion," said Marek. "We don't swim."
"Then sit in the middle," said Linnea, "and hold on to Torvald."
Torvald held out an arm as wide as a barn door.
Marek went aboard with great dignity, and sat, and gripped the bear.
The others came on behind him, one at a time.
Kaelen took the bow, because he took every front.
Ruvan found the one dry corner and was, somehow, already in it.
