Chapter 13: Not the Bride
The hall didn't explode this time.
It went so quiet I heard the furnace kick on under the floorboards.
Kirsten put both hands over her mouth.
My father leaned back in his chair and laced his fingers over his belly.
"Fate voids," he said down the long table. "Old law. Every one of you knows it."
The eldest didn't look at him.
She was looking at Magnus.
"The law gives a King one answer to a fated mate," she said.
"He gives it at the Frost Moon, on the bluff, before the seven packs."
"Then I'll give it there," Magnus said.
"And until then?"
"Until then my wife is my wife."
Kirsten's hands came down from her mouth.
"Your wife," she said softly. "You felt me on that stone, Magnus. You can't stand next to her and feel me."
"I can stand wherever I like."
Three hundred heads turned toward me.
It was the look from the feast, the whole room waiting for the spare to sit down.
I stood up instead.
"Is my answer finished?" I asked the eldest.
She blinked at me over her glasses.
