Chapter 16: Dorothea
Joanna's POV
Dorothea came across the church parking lot at five with her gray cardigan buttoned wrong.
She looked behind her twice, then opened the back door of Erik's truck and got in beside me.
Erik stayed out on the curb with his hands in his pockets, watching the road.
"Mrs. Granlund," Dorothea said.
"You can call me Joanna."
"I haven't earned that."
"No," I said. "You haven't."
She nodded and kept her eyes on her hands.
Her glasses had a crack at one corner, and under the dome light her eyes were swollen.
"He moved my sister at midnight," she said. "A van came to the home."
"I know. Erik told me."
"I won't be able to see her until Monday. They say she wouldn't eat. She doesn't know where she is, and I'm the one person she knows."
"I'm sorry," I said, and meant it, and was surprised that I did.
"I'll say it all," she said. "The powder, the dose, the notebook, what he told me. I'll say it to a judge or a policeman or the church ladies. I've stopped caring who hears."
"Craig will say you're a liar."
"I know."
"He'll say you're a bitter old woman who stole from me and made up a story when she was caught."
"He will say that." Her mouth worked. "He has said it to me already, in the kitchen, as a joke."
I looked out the windshield at the church sign, with its Sunday sermon in black letters.
"If you go to the police tomorrow, he sits in a nice office with a nice lawyer, and your word is the only thing against his," I said. "He has the house staff, the doctor's note and the petition. He calls me unstable. You become a woman who was fired."
