Chapter 21: Signed

Quinn's father didn't raise his voice.

He stood at table two with one hand on the back of his chair, and he spoke across thirty feet of silence.

"Is it true?"

Quinn came to the edge of the stage in her white satin, with the pad slipping at her waist.

"Daddy. It's not what it looks like."

"Is there a child?"

"There's going to be."

"Is there a child, Quinn?"

She opened her mouth.

I watched her look for a lie, and I watched her not find one big enough.

"No," she said.

A woman near the front gasped aloud.

"I went to the board," he said. "I went to the board for you. I had a good man put on leave, on your word that he'd wronged you."

"I was hurt."

"You let me do that to him." He said it very quietly. "In front of my colleagues. I told them my daughter was carrying a child."

"Daddy, please."

"I'm sixty-six years old," he said, "and I have never been ashamed in a room until now."

He pushed his chair in, neatly.

Then he turned his back on the stage and walked up the aisle.

His own daughter called after him, high and cracked, "Daddy!"

He didn't turn around.

The doors at the end of the ballroom opened and closed, and the sound of them went through the whole room.

Quinn put both hands over her face.

The pad had come loose.

It slid down the satin and dropped onto the stage with a soft thump, and a man at table nine laughed before he could stop himself.

She picked it up, and held it, and stood there with her shoulders shaking, and no one went to her.
